About

Hi, I'm Viktor

László Viktor, from Hungary. This is what I do with my free time.

By day I have a day job. After it, I write software for fun, mostly in Rust, mostly for the terminal. A fair share of my free time goes into waiting for things to compile, and I've made peace with it: it's not frozen, it's just Rust. (Alt-Tab is my main sport.)

The pattern is always the same. I learn how something works, then I can't rest until I've built one. That's how I ended up with a radio in my terminal.

What I'm building

My biggest project is sdrtop, a terminal monitor for software-defined radios. It shows spectrum and waterfall, measures things instead of guessing them, and runs keyboard-only, even over SSH on a modest machine. I test it against a HackRF One, an RTL-SDR and a tinySA Ultra.

It is never almost done. I said that before 0.6.0 too, and then Bluetooth happened. Before the radio phase it was homelab dashboards and containers, and whatever comes next will probably end up here as well.

What you'll find here

  • Technical write-ups: how I solved something, the logic behind it, and how it could have been done differently. The roads not taken are often the more interesting ones.
  • Dev logs with the dead ends left in, because that's where I actually learn things.
  • Everything around the code: programming in general, some philosophy, and the occasional personal thing.

Expect opinions with error bars. If I'm guessing, I'll say so, and if I got something wrong, I'd much rather be corrected than stay confidently wrong.

Say hi
